With an instantly addictive melody and a chorus proclaiming “You’ll make it on your own,” it’s easy to envision this song cheering up the heartbroken, but it’s as much for the band as it is for the listener. In 2013, they were offered a major professional opportunity: a lucrative six-month residency on a cruise ship. Unfortunately, they were dismissed after two weeks and deported back to Canada. Many bands would call it quits after such hopeful dreams were dashed, but Of Gentlemen & Cowards soldiered on. Lead vocalist Simon Edwards wrote the song on a soul-searching hiking excursion shortly after their high seas adventures fell apart. It quickly came together, because greater truths were revealing themselves. The disappointment isn’t important; it’s that they took the risk. It didn’t work out, but they’re stronger for it, resulting in a song that could only have be inspired by experience.
lyrics
The escarpment seems so pretty
When the city falls asleep
But you'll never find the time to
Recognize it till you leave
Hey the summer'd suit you when you didn't escape
Well I'm sorry that you felt like that's the only way
I hear that you've been nervous
Yeah we're all a little nervous
So drive a little faster
On the wrong side of the road
Come back from where you ran to
You'll make it on your own
You'll make it on your own
Go make it on your own
Hey you're beautiful I wanna know your name
I've been looking for a someone to come up and say
I've been lost since I met you
I was lost, till I found you
Hey I wanna take you to a place I know
We can climb up to the water and enjoy the show
So come on and lean closer
Not too long, it might be over
So drive a little faster
On the wrong side of the road
Come back from where you ran to
You'll make it on your own
You'll make it on your own
Go make it on your own

Formed in 2010, the band has seen ups and downs, including an appearance on Late Night With David Letterman and an ill-fated
cruise ship gig that both broke the band’s heart and yet transformed their sound into a more soulful one. Through it all, Of Gentlemen & Cowards persevered, and this young band’s brand of optimistic, well-crafted soulful rock is borne from its experiences, both good and bad....more
